Today’s Music
Janneke Hoogland, cellist, and I have assembled a collection of time-tested and well-loved classical favorites. The threads running through all of these pieces are woven from many strands of fun, beautiful, playful, lyrical, moving, elegant, surprising, familiar – in short, why we love playing all of this music for you, and why many of these tunes have found their way into movie scores and lists of greatest hits. Enjoy this sampling of music from Elgar’s love letter to his fiancé, to the holy setting where the lovely melody “Eat this Bread” was written in Taizé, France, from modern-day Argentina (Astor Piazzolla) to 19th-century Austria (Maria von Paradis), and from Bach’s schoolroom to Saint-Saëns’ living room (Carnival of the Animals).
