Born in New York City but raised in Laguna Beach, CA, Henry Adam Curtis began piano lessons at age five, and at the age of eleven performed his recital debut at UC Irvine. At fifteen he made his concerto debut with the San Diego Symphony performing Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto #2 in g-minor. As a scholarship student at the USC School of Performing Arts he double-majored in Piano Performance and Music Composition. He studied with Joanna Graudan, Daniel Pollack, Leonard Stein and Frederick Lesemann. He completed his Bachelors Degree in Music Composition at the Mannes College of Music in NYC under the tutelage of Charles Jones, later completing his Masters in Music Composition at UC San Diego.
Since 1989 Mr. Curtis has resided on the beautiful island of Kauai, Hawaii, where he is active teaching, performing and recording a varied repertoire ranging from Classical Crossover to Jazz, Hawaiian, and Sacred music. His original music is featured on three Windham Hill Samplers, most recently “Sundown.” His recording for Polygram Records, “A Different Mozart,” landed him in the top-ten of the Billboard Classical Crossover chart. His compositions have been performed worldwide, most notably two premiers at Carnegie Recital Hall. As musical director “Hank” Curtis served as conductor and pianist for “South Pacific” at the Kauai Beach Resort from 2003 to 2016. Hank served as “Director of Music Ministries” at St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue from 2007 to 2014. In 2011 and 2012 he created original compositions and arrangements for the St. Michael’s “Jazz Mass.” Hank is also the Musical Director, pianist and vocal coach for Kauai’s own “KISS,” “Kauai Island Singers Showcase,” an organization which helps prepare up-and-coming vocalists to bring their music to the concert stage.
He now serves as Music Director and pianist/organist for All Saints Church in Kapaa, Kauai. Henry Adam Curtis has released four CDs of all acoustic piano music recorded at Different Fur in San Francisco and engineered by Howard Johnston. “Bird of Paradise” is a compilation of original piano pieces, “Hanalei Moon” a collection of original arrangements of Hawaiian tunes, “The Curtis Variations,” classical music reinvented, and most recently, “As Time Goes By,” all original arrangements of pop, Broadway and jazz tunes. Hank performs twice weekly at MahiKo Lounge at Gaylords, Kilohana, and is a private instructor in piano performance, music theory, composition and songwriting. Hank continues to perform his original compositions and piano arrangements of wildly diverse styles all from the heart!
