A New Hymn for a New Epiphany
Today we will sing a portion of “The Summons” together. This will be a new song for many of us. This music originated in Scotland in 1987, the work of John Bell, who is a pastoral and musical member of the Scottish Iona community. John Bell was educated in Glasgow and eventually answered a call to serve the marginalized and disenfranchised. He worked as youth pastor for the Church of Scotland, and eventually turned to composing hymns to address concerns missing from the current Scottish hymnal: “I discovered that seldom did our hymns represent the plight of poor people to God. There was nothing that helped see ourselves as brothers and sisters to those who are suffering from poverty or persecution.” [from an interview in Reformed Worship (March 1993)] Bell became the convener for the fourth edition of the Church of Scotland’s Church Hymnary (2005), and his hymns have since become popular across the world. – Adapted from Emily Brink, www.hymnary.org
