Today we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Bill Rolland through music that connects us to places and people from his Scottish heritage. BUNESSAN, named for a town on the Isle of Mull, was printed in Songs and Hymns of the Gael in 1888. The tune BROTHER JAMES’ AIR is named after the composer and poet James Leith Macbeth Bain, born in Pitlochry, Perthshire. Several tunes we sing today were first published in Edinburgh in the Scottish Psalter (1564), which included all 150 Psalms in English translation with tunes.
“Dark Lochnagar” is a poem by George Gordon, Lord Byron who was born near the Grampian Mountains in Aberdeenshire. Lochnagar is a mountain ridge in the Grampians with four distinct peaks above a loch with the same name.
