The melodies of Four Songs of Ronsard were composed by Darius Milhaud in the early 20th century after he fled Vichy-France and settled in Oakland. He originally scored the music for soprano and orchestra and dedicated it to the Metropolitan Opera star Lily Pons. The poetry comes from the prolific and popular French poet Pierre de Ronsard. Ronsard was among a group of poets who revived the classical Greek and Roman poetic forms in southern France in the 16th century.
