Song Without Words, Opus 109……Felix Mendelssohn
Welcome today to Janneke Hoogland, sharing her offering of music for the cello. Song Without Words by Felix Mendelssohn was written in 1847 for cello and piano just two years before the musical world was shaken by his untimely death. In that year, William Bradbury, an American composer and teacher from New York, was traveling in Europe, and attended the funeral of this renowned German composer and conductor in Berlin. William Bradbury had studied music in Boston and eventually settled in New York to pursue a career as composer, teacher, organist, and conductor. Two of today’s hymns are set to tunes that Bradbury published in the early 1860s, “Sweet Hour” and “Solid Rock.” Bradbury is better known, of course not for traveling in Europe, but for composing the tune set to “Jesus Loves Me, This I Know.”
