Singing the Creed: The Nicene Creed was established at the First Council of Nicaea. This was a council of Christian bishops convened in the Byzantine city of Nicaea by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in AD 325 (from Christianity.com). Today in 2023, we continue to sing what we believe, based on the words of this creed, set to poetry by Timothy Dudley Smith.
Dudley-Smith is a retired bishop of the Church of England and an honorary vice-president of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He has also been honored as a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada and a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music.
Bishop Dudley-Smith has been writing hymn texts for more than 50 years. His collected texts now number over 430, and are published in more than 250 hymnals throughout the English-speaking world.
